Mission Profile:
Kent and Yuko Muhling

Ministry Focus

The Muhlings live in Japan where they work with Asian Access as church planting missionaries.   They are partnering with a Japanese pastor and his wife to plant a new church in the unreached town of Inba, located an hour northeast of Tokyo.  They are building relationships through teaching English, university ministry, and special outreach events.  They are also active in the life of their new church – Yuko teaches children’s Sunday school and Kent assists the pastor with teaching, preaching, and leading worship.  The main goal of their ministry is to make disciples of Jesus Christ, “teaching them to obey everything I [Jesus] have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20).

About Japan

Japan is among the ten most highly developed nations in the world, and of these, it is the one least reached with the gospel of Jesus Christ. After 400 years of Christianity, less than 1% of Japan's 127 million people attend church. While most Japanese follow Japan's traditions of Buddhism and Shintoism, more than 80% claim no personal religion and only 10% believe in a God that can be known personally. Sadly, over 99% of Japanese have never experienced the grace of God through Jesus Christ.

Making an Impact in Japan

Asian Access is passionately committed to making Jesus known, loved, and served in Japan and across Asia. Their very successful Church Multiplication strategy is built on over 35 years of relational evangelism and leadership training in partnership with Japanese churches and the leaders who are making them strong.

In keeping with this strategy, the Muhlings are partnering with Japanese church planters to start a new work in a community that has yet to be reached with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Building Relationships

90% of Japanese who become Christians do so because they heard the gospel through a trusted friend or relative. Everything in the process of multiplying churches begins and ends with relationships that show forth the love and truth of Jesus Christ.

We loved you so much that we were delighted to give you not only the gospel of God, but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us." - 1 Thess 2:8

Paul didn't just "do evangelism" - he got deeply involved in peoples' lives. We intend to pursue ministry the same way - intentionally multiplying opportunities for sharing the gospel by developing significant, caring relationships with unbelievers.

Making Disciples

As relationships grow, trust develops. Tough questions about God, morality, about life and death, are worked through. Friends are gathered into a small group where the message of Jesus Christ is freely shared. Unbelievers see and hear the gospel lived out. Lives are impacted as the message bears fruit. New believers are taught God's Word and nurtured in their faith.

But being a Christian in Japan is hard. Many who profess faith later fall away. Our goal, therefore, is not many disciples, but committed disciples - who will follow Christ till they die. There is no shortcut. Making mature, committed disciples takes time.

Multiplying Churches

As new believers come together as a loving, caring, worshiping community is born. Spiritual growth continues. Disciples learn how to make disciples, penetrating other unreached communities with the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Multiplying disciples leads to multiplying churches, and the cycle continues.  Japan is slowly transformed from mission field to missionary sending nation. This is our dream: New disciples and new churches, all over Japan and all over the world.
